ORDER PLANTS ORDER PLANTS

Nandina domestica is a resilient shrub native to Asia that has been widely adopted in many homes and commercial landscapes in hardiness zones 6-10. It can be planted under partial shade or full sun and once established can tolerate dry and moist soils. Besides its versatility and resilience, Nandina domestica are also available in a wide range of foliage colors and some varieties change the color of their leaves depending on the time of the year.

Growers normally sell Nandina domestica in 1 and 3 gallon pots. Most growers leave some 1 gallon as shifters to later move into 3 gallon pots but is not unlikely to find growers that would direct stick a 72 liner in a 3 gallon pot to mainly avoid additional labor cost. We have found that direct sticking 3 72 liner plugs in a 3 gallon pot would improve the overall quality of the finish product, reduce grow times, and increase the profitability of the growing area.

Nandinas are an easy plant to grow when started in the right time of the year and with high quality liners. Download and follow our growing protocol for a successful and profitable harvest.

We are well known nationwide for Nandina domestica because we have been growing them in our lab and greenhouses since the late 1970’s, hold several patents, and are the largest Nandina liner grower in the USA.

In our catalog you will find a wide selection of Nandina domestica varieties that vary in foliage color and growing habits. Most of our nandinas are sterile and therefore do not bear fruit or are invasive plants.

Plants in liners undergo a meticulous process to ensure optimal delivery:

Stage #1

Stage #1

Tissue from a mother plant is dissected in the lab, with meristematic tissue placed in media to initiate growth.

Stage #2

Stage #2

Healthy tissues multiply in specialized media, promoting robust growth and branching.

Stage #3

Stage #3

Plants transition to rooting media with hormones to stimulate root development, preparing them for sale forecasting.

Stage #4

Stage #4

After 4-5 weeks of acclimation in a greenhouse, plants are market-ready, resembling typical liners.

Plants are propagated, packaged securely, and delivered fresh, meeting the needs of nurseries, landscapers, and garden centers efficiently. Check out our 3ppp protocol and ROI. We discovered that when planting 3ppp we were able to drastically reduce growing time and produced a more attractive container plant.

Frequently Asked Questions about Nandina domestica

Why not to plant nandina?

While Nandina domestica is a hardy plant, it’s best suited for zones 6 and above. If your area frequently experiences temperatures below 0°F, it may not thrive outdoors. However, Nandina domestica makes an excellent container plant, allowing you to bring it indoors during extreme cold to ensure its well-being.

How invasive is Nandina domestica?

While common Nandina domestica can be highly invasive, our tissue culture nandinas from MGN Liners are sterile, eliminating this concern. These varieties still produce berries, but they are sterile, ensuring they won't spread uncontrollably.

Is nandina a good or bad plant?

Nandina domestica is a great plant for gardens. It thrives in hot weather, requires minimal watering, and stays attractive year-round with its green leaves. Some varieties even offer beautiful leaf colors ranging from red to orange, adding extra charm to any garden setting.

Is Nandina domestica poisonous to humans?

Although Nandina domestica is a beautiful plant, it's important to exercise caution. Both humans and pets should avoid ingesting its berries, as they can be toxic if consumed in large quantities. When pruning, it's advisable to remove berries to prevent accidental ingestion, ensuring a safe environment for everyone in your garden.

How big does Nandina domestica grow?

The size of Nandina domestica varies by variety. Typically, they range from 2 to 5 feet tall when mature. Among the taller varieties are Cool Glow, Gulf Stream, Lemon Lime, and Obsession Nandinas. For shorter options, consider Nandina domestica Compacta, Harbour Belle, and Flirt Murasaki.

What is the aim of tissue culture?

  • Callus Culture: Callus culture involves using callus tissue to regenerate new plantlets. A callus, similar to scar tissue, is a mass of undifferentiated cells that can divide and specialize. This tissue culture method is advantageous due to its minimal upkeep and indefinite maintenance.
  • Organ Culture: Organ culture regenerates whole plants from specific organs or tissues like stems, roots, leaves, flowers, or vascular tissues. This method is faster than cell culture but slower than meristem culture.
  • Meristem Culture: Meristem culture uses the primary growing points of plants to regenerate new, disease-free plantlets. Meristems grow rapidly, outpacing viruses and bacteria, but the amount of usable tissue is often very small, making extraction and regeneration challenging.

What does nandina look like in winter?

Nandina domestica really put on a show during the winter. Each variety offers its own unique winter hues, ranging from deep reds and purples to pinks and greens. With such diversity, there's a Nandina to complement every color palette in your garden.

Do nandinas like sun or shade?

Nandinas thrive in a variety of lighting conditions, but they generally prefer full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and development. While they can tolerate some shade, providing ample sunlight helps them achieve their best foliage colors and overall health.

Where is the best place to plant Nandina domestica?

Nandina domestica is quite adaptable and can thrive in full sun, partial shade, and even full shade for some varieties. They can grow in various soil types, but prefer well-drained soil to avoid pests and diseases associated with consistently wet or soggy conditions. This flexibility makes them  an excellent choice for many different garden settings.

Should I get rid of my nandina?

No way! Nandina domestica is a low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for plant that enhances your landscape year-round. It requires minimal trimming, needs very little water, and can thrive in both sun and shade. Plus, its changing colors throughout the year add beauty and interest to your garden.

Is nandina poisonous to dogs?

Yes, Nandina domestica can be toxic to dogs if consumed in large quantities. It's important to monitor pets around the plant and consider removing berries to prevent accidental ingestion.

Are nandinas low maintenance?

Absolutely! Nandina domestica is very low maintenance, making it almost a "plant it and forget it" type of shrub. It's perfect for any landscape, requiring minimal care while providing year-round beauty.

Do nandinas lose all their leaves in winter?

No, Nandina domestica retains its leaves in winter and looks amazing during the cooler months. Varieties like Firepower, Gulf Stream, and Lemon Lime showcase especially vivid colors when exposed to sunlight, adding vibrant beauty to your winter landscape.

What are the cons of nandina?

There are few downsides to Nandina domestica, especially when you choose non-invasive varieties from MGN Liners. One potential concern is the toxicity of the berries if consumed in large quantities. However, this can be easily managed by pruning to remove the berries, ensuring a safe and worry-free addition to any garden.
